Youth _ by. Samuel Ullman 청춘 - 사무엘 울만 Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind. 청춘이란 인생의 어떤 한 시기가 아니라, 어떤 마음 가짐을 뜻한다. It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees. 청춘이란 장미 빛 볼, 붉은 입술 그리고 유연한 무릎을 뜻하는 것이 아니라, It is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions. 강인한 의지, 풍부한 상상력, 불타는 열정이다. It is the freshness of the deep springs of life. 청춘이란 인생의 깊은 샘에서 솟아나는 신선한 정신이다. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. 청춘이란 두려움을 물리치는 용기와 안이함을 뿌리치는 모험심을 의미한다. This often exists in man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. 때로는 스무살의 청년보다 예순 살의 노인이 더 청춘일 수 있다. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. 나이를 먹는다고 누구나 늙는 것은 아니다. We grow old by deserting our ideals. 이상을 잃어 버릴 때 비로소 늙는 것이다. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. 세월은 피부를 주름지게 하지만, 열정을 상실할 때 영혼이 주름진다. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust. 근심, 두려움, 자신감의 상실은 정신을 굴복시키고 영혼을 한낱 재로 소멸시킨다. Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being heart the lure of wonder, the infilling child-like appetite of what is next, and the joy of the game of living. 예순이건 열여섯이건, 모든 인간의 가슴속에는 경이로움에 대한 호기심, 아이처럼 왕성한 미래의 탐구심과 인생이라는 게임에 대한 즐거움이 있다. But as long as your aerials are up to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty. 그러나 당신의 기개가 낙관주의 파도를 잡고 있는 한, 그대는 80살로도 청춘의 이름으로 죽을 수 있는 희망이 있다. 　 　 몇 번을 읽고 들어도 또 읽고 또 듣고 싶은 이 시(詩).... 마음에 힘을 북돋게 하는 이상한 마력(魔力)을 지닌 시입니다. 아마도 청춘이란 인간의 어떤 육체적 시기(時期)가 아니라 어떤 마음가짐을 뜻한다는 그 한마디 때문이 아닌가 생각합니다. 　 사무엘 울만이 〈청춘〉이라는 시(詩)를 쓴 것은 78세 때였습니다. 하지만 이 작품이 빛을 보게 된 것은 훨씬 뒤, 그것도 생각지도 못한 인물을 통해서였지요. 태평양 전쟁이 끝나갈 무렵, 종군기자 프레더릭 팔머는 필리핀 마닐라에 주둔하고 있던 미국 극동군 총사령관 맥아더를 찾아갑니다. 　 맥아더와 이런저런 이야기를 나누던 중, 팔머는 우연히 책상 위의 액자 속에 들어 있던〈Youth〉라는 시(詩)를 보았고, 순식간에 빠져들었습니다. 수년 전 선물 받았다는 이 시(詩)를 맥아더는 매일 암송할 만큼 좋아했습니다. 시(詩)는 결국 팔머의 손을 거쳐 〈리더스 다이제스트〉 1945년 12월 호에 ‘어떻게 젊게 살 것인가(How to stay young)’라는 제목의 기사로 소개됐습니다. 　 이후 그것을 본 오카다 요시오라는 사람이 이를 번역해 책상에 붙여놓았고, 또다시 그의 친구가 신문을 통해 일본 지식인층에 소개해 놀라운 반향을 일으켰습니다. 이렇게 해서 이 시(詩)는 전 세계적으로 유명해지게 된 것입니다.

靑 春 청춘이란 인생의 어떤 기간이 아니라 마음 가짐을 말한다. 장미의 용모, 붉은 입술, 나긋나긋한 손발이 아니라 씩씩한 의지, 풍부한 상상력, 불타오르는 정열을 가리킨다. 청춘이란 인생의 깊은 샘의 청신함을 말한다. 청춘이란 두려움을 물리치는 용기, 안이함을 선호하는 마음을 뿌리치는 모험심을 의미한다. 때로는 20세 청년보다도 70세 인간에게 청춘이 있다. 나이를 더해 가는 것만으로 사람은 늙지 않는다. 이상을 잃어버릴 때 비로소 늙는다. 세월은 피부에 주름살을 늘려 가지만 열정을 잃으면 마음이 시든다. 고뇌, 공포, 실망에 의해서 기력은 땅을 기고 정신은 먼지가 된다. 70세든 16세든 인간의 가슴에는 경이에 이끌리는 마음, 어린애와 같은 미지에 대한 탐구심, 인생에 대한 흥미와 환희가 있다. 그대에게도 나에게도 마음의 눈에 보이지 않는 우체국이 있다. 인간과 하느님으로부터 아름다움, 희망, 기쁨, 용기, 힘의 영감을 받는 한 그대는 젊다. 영감이 끊기고, 정신이 아이러니의 눈에 덮이고, 비탄의 얼음에 갇혀질 때 20세라도 인간은 늙는다. 머리를 높이 치켜 들고 희망의 물결을 붙잡는 한, 80세라도 인간은 청춘으로 남는다. ******************사무엘 울만 Youth is not a time of life－it is a state of mind.
